forced out

there is one out a runner on first.The batter hits a ground ball to first.First baseman tags first base then throws to second.The runner returns to first without getting to second base.The runner was call out back at first.The umpire saying he was forced, but since the first baseman tagged the base first to get the runner out wouldn't that remove the force play.Any help thank you

Runner is safe at first in that situation.Once the firstbaseman took the out by tagging the bag,the force play is now removed.Since the runner had not advanced to the next base and the force is removed,he should have been ruled safe at first.
