NCAA has the best idea. If the batter is completely within the box and the pitch enters the box, there is no question, nor does said batter have to move. HBP

Are you going to call him back?

Are you going to eject the pitcher?

Guaranteed, whatever you decide there will be a coach out there that will disagree. But thats ok, the Rulebook says the batter permitted the ball to hit him. "Come back here son".

Sometimes you just have to umpire .......PERIOD.

Some pitches give a batter time to get out of the way. But sometimes a batter freezes and doesn't know which way to move. If i judge that the batter deliberately allowed the pitch to hit him -- or even moved into it -- i'll keep him in the box. Otherwise, hbp.

If a coach complains, i'll tell him: If you don't want him to get 1b, don't pitch in the batter's box.

It depends on who you think instigated the situation.

Did the pitcher throw at the batter, or did the batter "take one for the team".

64 MPH? Did the ball bounce up and hit the batter? Was Satchel Paige throwing an Ephus pitch? Perhaps the batter was a slow kid with slow reactions and couldn't get out of the way, or was so mesmerized by the ball coming in looking like a beach ball that he froze.

I'm not ejecting any pitcher who tries to hit a batter with a 64 MPH pitch.

Trying to hit the batter is an automatic ej - and it's usually really obvious.

My point was that if 64 is the best you can do, then you really aren't good enough to throw at a batter intentionally to start with.
