Ball hit on ground down third base line. Rolls to the fence line. fence line stops at at the left field foul line. By the time ball gets where the fence should be the runner is almost to 2b. Ball keep rolling past fence line.

Ground Rule Double, or Out of Play

So, if the player is almost to second, is he awrded third (past ball) or or kept at 2B(grdbl)?

Makes no difference where he was. It's from the time of the pitch. The only time three bases are awarded, is when the batted ball is contacted with detached equipment, such as a thrown glove.

What is a "past ball"? If you mean "passed ball", how can that happen on a batted ball?

past ball, pissed ball, pussed ball, pests ball.

So it's a ground rule double and should stay at 2B
Thanks

Ground rule double.

Make sure to cover this in the pre-game conference with the coaches. I kringe when I hear some officials agree to a ground rule triple.

See OBR 7.05 for complete listing of awards.

Actually, it's a rule book double, batted fair ball leaves the live ball area.......

He could have been inches from third, he's still going to be placed at second.

The rule in this case, exists to protect the defense, not reward the offense.

He could be all the way home when the ball goes out. He still goes back to 2B.
