Question

under LL rules what is the penalty for throwing the bat after hitting a fair ball? I have called the batter out, but allowed him to stay in the game? I have also have heard the correct ruling is is to eject the batter from the game, and put a pinch runner in his place if he was safe ??? I have asked a lot of people and seem to get different answers !

We'll try this again

Under NO official rules can a batter ever be called out for throwing the bat. That means The Offficial Rules of Baseball, The NCAA Rule Book, The NAIA Rule Book, The National Federation of High Schools Rule & Case Book and The Official Little League Rule book.

HOWEVER, sometimes LOCAL leagues make exceptions to rules.

The "real" answer to your question is:

"After repeatedly throwing the bat a player MAY BE ejected."

Check with local authorities for the pesky litle "local rulings."

For whatever reason many leagues want this to be an out. According to LL's national UIC he wants a warning then an ejection. For temper tamtrum throws no warning is necessary.

A batter may be called out for throwing the bat, ONLY if it interferes with a fielder attempting to make a play.

Talking

and what is the ruling for a fielder throwing a bat
at a baserunner? oh yeah, no ejection but a $50k fine,
just ask the rocket...

just curious what some of you umpires would have
done in a college, high school or youth league game
if this were to occur. i realize it's hard to imagine
since almost none of these use wooden bats and
would not occur in the same manner, but what if?

i have always thought ejection would have been
appropriate..., come on, he thought it was the ball?!?

i was at the alcs game in 1990 when clemens was
ejected for basically shaking his head in disgust
of ball/strike calls and the piazza incident seemed
much worse, not to mention dangerous.

never been a rocket fan, if you couldn't tell,
