Obviously the replay angles we have don't show squat, and would not overturn this call no matter what direction the call went.

Consider this, however... how often do you see players in MLB throw to a base to appeal a missed base? Leaving early - yes, occasionally... but missed base - dang near never. So it must have been apparent from OTHER angles as well that the base was missed - or the defense wouldn't have bothered.

What do the Diamondbacks have to lose...another game? :)

Heck against the 1st place team, they have nothing to lose, but they're not going to waste their time either.

I'm sorry, but from where I was sitting, it's clear to me that he missed the bag. He kicked up dirt with the foot in question, the bag never moved, and if you look at the angle, Lane had the best seat in the house, even though he was at home. I agree - He could have made the call from 120 feet away.
Question though - in 4-man, when U3 went out, wasn't Lane supposed to rotate up to 3rd, and U1 rotate down to home? Maybe, b/c there was no play at 3rd, he just didn't bother?

I also looks like the side of his foot may have hit the bag.

I also thought that Layne should have rolled up to third and had the 1st base ump roll home...I maybe wrong.

If you watch the video again the 1st base umpire is rolling home and stops when he sees Layne still there.

Yeah, that has to be what happened - Layne decided it was too much trouble b/c there wasn't going to be a play, so he stayed home, and U1 took his cue from that.

Why is this thread even here? The camera angles are clearly . . . unclear. I think he missed the base, given the placement of his foot, but like the Davidson foul ball call, there is no way to tell from the available angles. As GoodwillRef admits. Layne had the best angle, and he was guaran-dang-teed sure the runner missed the bag. No doubt whatsover.

Sheesh. Q.E.D. "Call on the field stands." Runner's out. Thanks for playing. Nothing to see here, citizens, let's move along.

Well and the simple fact that the play was appealed means that someone else saw him miss it as well. MLB is not in the habit of making appeals unless someone on the field or a dugout spy saw the miss pretty obviously.

Thanks
David

Methinks there's an echo in here. :)
