This is how I do it too. I don't want to start calling out location for fear of overdoing it and sounding like a play-by-play announcer.

After watching Buck drool over himself interviewing barak, I had to change the station. I was so disgusted with these oafs. And why do I want to watch the president make stupid during the All Star Game? Oh yeah, I didn't.

I sent Fox hate emails on that one. Purely disgusted! More than the usual knowing McCarver's and Buck's ignorance level is already pegging the meter!

What was particularly disgusting was the interview of Joe Buck right in the middle of Adrian Gonzalez during the Home Run Derby.

Instead of giving the respect due Gonzalez while he is batting and focusing on him, ESPN decided to force Chris Berman, and the always obnoxious Joe Morgan to ask the most inane, repetitious questions of Joe Buck. They did the obligatory questions about Jack Buck, and of course Morgan chimes in with "I remember working for your daddy....." Puleeze!!! Meanwhile, they briefly cut back to see how Adrian is doing in between questions and then it's, "oh Adrian Gozalez has 9 outs and 2 HR, oh that's the 10th out, and he's out..." They did not disrespect any other participant in this fashion. They gave Fielder, Pujols, Howard and everyone else their full attention. Nobody gave interviews in the middle of their time batting.

Why ESPN chose that particular time for a shameless attempt for ratings with a Joe Buck interview is beyond me. I was absolutely furious, as were many other San Diegans, as is evident by all the criticism leveled at ESPN on the local sports talk radio shows. Just unbelievable disrespect.

DeMuth ruled that the ball hit Jeter's hand first, then the knob, or else simultaneously, which is a HBP.

Whoa! I teach LL umpires, and I'll step on the neck of those that are so insecure about their calls that they need to explain them by calling location. All it does it induce arguing. "THAT WASN'T DOWN!", as opposed to leaving them guessing. "maybe it was outside".

What do you mean, Kimosabe?

Okay, is this better: He must have seen it with his eyes.

One of the first peices of advice I ever got from a vet was this... whenever a coach asks you directly where a pitch was, agree with him. "Was that outside?" "Yes." No sense in making them think you missed it on the 1 dimension they are more sure about.

nah, i try to say as little as I can. I don't really vocalize my ball calls and take my sweet time calling strikes and calling outs. sometimes, on the bases, on a routine out at first, the runner will be almost in his dugout before I signal the out. the more obvious the call, the more time I take to "acknowledge" it.

as for demuth, he's a 26 year MLB vet with major league credibility, as far as i'm concerned, he can yell "Bonzai!" for strikes if he wants or pull his best ron luciano impression if he wants. sure, mlb umps can have lazy mechanics but they have the credibility to carry them.
