Foster also called Texiera out at home yesterday, even though the C clearly tagged him with an empty glove, and the ball in his bare hand. The Yankee announcers had a field day with that one, questioning whether MLB now had 'electricity' like you used to have while playing sandlot ball....

And lets not even mention Hirschbeck getting Texiera out at home Friday on a sweep tag, when he was totally out of position - directly on top of the play, and not on 3B line extended, like he should have been..from the proper angle he would have seen the hand in before the tag...

The first two were posted within 2 minutes of each other. We were formulatting our threads at the same time, immediately after the story broke on Baseball Tonight.

That almost makes it sound exciting.

Happens all the time though. Red Sox Pedroia (sp) had the same play last week, he tagged the runner at second with ball in hand. He's out and not a word or complaint.

Happened so fast, only the guys on ESPN could see it later on replay.
That's a very hard call to make as an umpire with players at that level of play.

Your post contradicts itself: the first paragraph suggests that the umpire called it wrong on purpose, but the second suggests that he blew it because it's a tough call at that level. What are you saying?

I'll rephrase, it happens all the time that umpires might miss a call when the fielder tags with the glove and the ball in hand.

Especially at high levels (players that shave) because the action is so fast and the players, like Pedroia did quickly put the ball in his glove as he moved out of the play.

When the umpire saw the glove, the ball was in it since Pedroia was on the outfield side of the bag making the tag.

I would never suggest that an umpire makes a call wrong on purpose, but in the spirit of the debate, if the ball is there long before the runner, yes most umpires will call the out.
