OBR - Interference Double Play 7.09(g)

Need clarification -
1. 7.09(g) BR causes interference to break-up double play, BR out as well as Runner nearest home plate.

Scenario: R1 and R3...BR causes interference to avoid DP...BR out and R3 is out? R1 advances to 2B. Correct?

2. I had a reference in my notes that if there are less than 2 outs, Runner interferes to break up DP, same rule applies...7.09(f) refers just to Runner and BR being called out...is there any reference to this rule that changes it if there are less than two outs.
Thanks!

JPaco,

1. Correct except that normally the R1 would be retuned to 1B. Exception would be if there were an "intervening play" by the defense and the R1 had already reached 1B at the TOI.

2. Well, unless there are less than two outs, it is pretty hard to get a double play, so I'm not sure what you're asking.

I guess with no outs this may come into play. You are right with 1 or 2 outs it doesn't matter, innings over and R3 cannot score. Example: which is correct call?

Scenario: 0 outs - R3 and R1 - BR hits grounder to F4, R1 causes Interference to prevent DP.

Ruling 1. R1 is out, and R3 is out. BR advances to 1B.

Ruling 2: R1 is Out, BR is Out, and R3 returns to 3B.

Based on reading the rule, Ruling 2 applies. R1 and BR out. R3 returns to 3B.

Generally, number of outs only applies to BI with R3 stealing HP.

Thanks UMPJM and GA...enjoy the weekend...sometimes I drill down a little too deep in interpreting rules.

If a BASE RUNNER interferes, then rule 7.09(f) applies --the runner and the BR are out; other runners return.

If the BATTER RUNNER interferes, then rule 7.09(g) applies -- the BR and the runner closest to home are out; other runners return.

(note: those are 2007 references, so the numbers might have changed)

The references in the version of OBR at mlb.com are the same.
