MLB: Appeal: Oh,those announcers!

Yanks/Twinkies on YES 5/16. Twins at bat.

R1, R3. 1 out. B1 flies out to F8. R3 tags up and crosses home. R1 breaks with bat-crack.

Jeter and co. try to get F8 to play to 1B, but throw goes home. No play at home.

R1 slides into 2B, advances 1 step past the base, and retreats toward 1B, without retouch of 2B. As he stands on 1B, Yanks appeal at 2B, and R1 is called out. Needless to say, this happened WELL after R3 had plated.

Michael Kay (play-by-play) actually reported the appeal call properly, citing that R1 did not retouch 2B. Of course, this is to the Yanks' advantage.

Then we get into the glue.

Since the appeal is the third out, it's time for commercials. Kay says something to the effect, "Well, let's see if they score the run ... right after this."

Back to live action: The scoreboard still shows no run for the visitors (shocked, I am!). Skip Gardenhire has to come out and have his say.

NOW, the director decides to show a split screen of R1 returning to first and R3 plating. They do this 3-4 times, as if this actually affected the play. There was, of course, no play at 1B.

I think it was color guy, David Cone, who said, "Well, it looked like [R3] scored before [R1] touched first, so they're going to count the run." The scoreboard operator begrudgingly placed the digit.

This viewer was furious at first, but this gave way to laughter. Did anyone else see it?

Ace, if you're even taking a split second to be furious at anything an announcer has to say about rules or umpiring you're giving it way too much thought. Let them tell you who's at bat, the color of the blue sky, the interlocking NY with no name ... of course. But to give a second thought to anything they have to say about rules is giving them way too much credit.

Announcers are idiots.

I don't think Ace is giving them any credit...it's nice to read about this stuff on here so when we have to play "mythbuster" we have context.

Not to mention it keeps our opinions of most announcers consistent.

So smart, in fact, that he wouldn't hang himself like that. Vinny's the best!

And Rich Burk, the broadcaster for my local AAA team. A year or two ago when the umpires made a mess of an IFF, during the confusion he actually said, "The purpose of the infield fly rule is to protect the offense."

But these guys are exceptions to the rule.

I cringe whenever they (most of the announcers) call every foul ball that gets past the catcher a foul tip....

Mike Shannon (StL Cardinals radio broadcaster): "That foul tip bounced up and caught him right in the groins...and that'll really clear your eyes out!"

Was it past the 4th inning? If so, he was already hammered.

If Tim McCarver were working with him, he would've chimed in "No I don't think that's correct..."
