Reebok Plate Shoes

Guys,I've been a NB 450 guy(3 sets),but if you haven't tried the Reebok, you are missing out on the most comfortable shoe on the market.Honigs is the only place I could find my size, but they claim to have a pretty good stock of them as Reebok didn't know the demand would be so great,so says alot of dealers I tried ordering from.Anyways just going to pass that along, try'em,you won't regret it!!

I concur. Bought a pair after my cousin told me about his. (He got his free, the son-of-a-b!tch) Only suggestion I would make is to buy a width larger than normal. They seem to run a bit narrow. Not a big deal. I had to buy my NB's a half size larger than normal, so I'm accustomed to plate shoes varying somewhat.

johnSandlin Sun Mar 29, 2009 05:04pm

I bought a pair and love them so far. I had scouting between the NB shoes and asking around about the Reebok's and went with the Reeboks after seeing and hearing from guys that have the NB 450's that have had lace problems and this and that problem.

I just ordered a pair of New Balance today. I've never worn them, but I really like New Balance shoes in general so I figured the plate shoes would be to my liking as well. I've never had a pair of Reebok shoes that I found comfortable.

johnnyg08 Sun Mar 29, 2009 09:40pm

a year ago, you couldn't find a guy that liked them. how many free pair is Reebok giving away?

johnSandlin Sun Mar 29, 2009 09:48pm

If Reebok is giving shoes away for free, then I missed the announcement. May be Reebok went back to the designing drawing board and revamped their quality of the products they make and sell.

I will be keeping my NB's as back-up. Some on here think they are difficult to lace and I've read that they are difficult to put on when you have a high arch. Once on, however, they are light and comfortable.

My new Reeboks, however, are even more comfortable and feel lighter. Right now, I consider them quite simply the best plate shoe I have ever worn and my past collection includes spot-bilt (two pair) (way back in the day), Davis (two pair), PlusPos, Honigs(two pair), NB's and now Reebok.

Call Kessler's in Atlanta, you'll save a bundle.

I'll buy a pair when they come out with a less garish design, or when I discover something more effective than Testor's model car paint to black out all of that white. Look at these things. They're a big compromise on the not-too-much-white standard. I'm not that good an artist. That little N on each New Balance is about my speed:

Good grief, can't they just use the white outline like the football shoes? Even that would be passable: https://www.bens.at/images/reebo_thorp.jpg

ManInBlue Mon Mar 30, 2009 10:08pm

Kevin, non-acetyl finger nail polish remover takes the white off. Then black die for safety sake, then polish. Blacked out the +POS logo that way - a little work but it looks great!!

Just a helpful hint for future reference.

The negative comments then were based on the appearance. The positive comments now are based on their confort and functionality.

When the NB's first came out, the comments regarding the "fugly" appearance of the rivited metatarsl plate were also highly negative. The comments became positive once people starting wearing them.

The phobia of white trim on plate shoes is gradually falling by the wayside just as it has on base shoes.

The Reboks are even more comfortable that NB's and far easier to lace.

To each his own.

jkumpire Mon Mar 30, 2009 11:12pm

What makes them more comfortable than the NB's?

Every pair of Reeboks I have ever tried have been way too narrow for me, while the 2E's or 4E's of the NB's are perfect. If they have made the shoes better great for them! But color me unconvinced at this point.

com·fort·a·ble (kmfr-t-bl, kmft-bl, kmftr-)
adj.
1. Providing physical comfort.
2. Free from stress or anxiety; at ease.
3. Producing feelings of ease or security,
4. Sufficient to provide financial security.

I'd say a lot more of number one and a little more of number three than the NB's.

I stated earlier that they run narrow and one should order one width size larger than usual.

What you are colored really doesn't concern me. Whether or not you ever wear Reebok plates shoes is insignificant. This thread was started by someone who enjoys his Reeboks. I entered the thread to relate my experience. I own no stock in the company and don't work for shoe retailer. I have no vested interest in what anyone choses to wear.

cardinalfan Tue Mar 31, 2009 07:47am

It's good there is competition between two "comfortable" plate shoes on the market.
My feet wish I'd had my NB's about 15 years ago.

jkumpire Tue Mar 31, 2009 08:20am

Mr. Umpire,

Sorry I irritated you, take it easy big guy. Thanks for your four point speech and the dictonary definition, you did give me a complete answer :).

If we are talking about comfortable plate shoes, the most comfortable ones I ever wore were the original Van's plate shoes that came out in the mid 1980's. I still wish they made them, the last guys to own the molds (Riddell) did not do a good job with them.

Plate shoes

I just bought a pair yesterday. My Honig's shoes started to separate where the rubber bottom meets the leather top. I love the Honig's patent leather, but I have these less than a year. I had to have a pair for last night. I thought the Reebok felt and looked great. They are bit heavier than the Honigs.

Wow!

That's very cool. Strip some first, and then blacken.

I needed something else for my supply kit--there are two empty pockets. Now I can add nail polish remover next to the hair spray. :D

johnnyg08 Tue Mar 31, 2009 11:48am

I'd like to see pictures posted of the nail polish remover job.

On the old +POS shoes, lacquer thinner removed the white lettering.

You could try that as well (if the lettering seems to be "painted" on p/leather below and not a sewn on piece of fabric as on the NB)

Do a search and you'll find them for less than what Honigs demands. I've been very disappointed with Honig's pricing lately. I used to get two thirds of my uniforms and gear from them. It's now down to pants only.

I'm not irritated, annoyed or even bugged a little. Just saying that I'm not in this thread to argue, cajole or persuade. I simply stated why I mad the change from NB to Reebok. Everyone's mileage may vary, and it won't affect me in the least.

SJUMBA93 Tue Mar 31, 2009 01:12pm

The best price that I have seen for the Reebok plate shoe:

Purchase Officials Supplies NorthEast :: Baseball / Softball :: Shoes, Socks & Shoe/Foot Care :: Umpire Shoes :: NEW! Reebok Magistrate Plate Shoes - ON SALE NOW

They'll slowly but surely get priced out of the market. I too, am down to my pants. (that doesn't read the best does it?)

Nah, remove the model paint and use THAT pocket!!!

You probably don't have time to finish the Falcon between games anyway.:p

Same thing with their protective gear. Their single bar mask, K1, and the K30 shin guards are now more expensive than their Wilson counterparts, especially if you are willing to shop around on the Wilson stuff. I bought a Dyna-Lite from CAT Sports for $59 and Honig's single bar mask is $75. The Wilson Titanium mask is $259 there and $229 at GD - the next highest price. WTF?

JR12 Thu Apr 02, 2009 08:13am

Several sites have the Titanium for $199

I would recommend putting some gel insoles in them. I found that they didn't have a lot of cushion and arch support.

I had my first plate with them Monday. They felt like base shoes. Very nice.

And Kevin: Your model paint technique worked well on the "N" logos.

I noticed this when I first purchased them in early 2008. I had to order not a half size but a full one size larger just to get them on. I was using and breaking shoe horns to get my size 11.5 feet into these size 12.5 shoes. Frustrating to say the least.

And lacing them? Just hope you don't have to do this right before a game or you could be spending a half hour struggling to get the laces in these dang things.

Unfortunately, Reebok has canceled plans to manufacture these shoes in extra wide or extra, extra wide (2E or 4E). They have stated that the "D" width is the widest in which they will offer these.

Really? Mine are double E.

UMP25 Thu Apr 02, 2009 08:47pm

I didn't say they can't be found anymore in those larger sizes, I just meant that they're not being made anymore. When I read this on Gerry Davis's site, I contacted Reebok, and their explanation was that Gerry Davis Sports is correct. Whatever stock resellers have of the 2E and 4E sizes are the only ones that will be available. Once those are gone, only the "D" widths will be obtainable.

Okay, so I confused what you meant to say (Reebok has decided not to continue manufacturing the shoe in EE and 4EE) with what you said, (Reebok decided not manufacture the shoe in EE and 4EE).

Gotcha.

Well, then that counts out a lot of people like me who now simply can't even wear the show. I suppose I'll never get to wear the vaunted Reebok plate show.

For baseball, no, nobody cares. It's the softball association that wants solid black shoes. I wish it was different but that's softball for you...
