quirky things you do...

example: As PU, I wear nylon tights and pull them over my shin guards to prevent my pants from getting stuck behing the top pads and making me look like I have on high waters.

I also cut out the toes of a pair of socks and roll them up on my ankle above my shoes to prevent my pants from getting stuck inside the back of my shoes. Especially works well when I call basketball, those pants always get stuck inside the back lip of the shoes.

I would consider at least the first one a usable trick--the second, I can't quite picture.

Interesting tip. I don't think I'll ever do it..but I think it's a cool idea. Do the Gerry Davis shins prevent the high water plate pants

briancurtin Fri Mar 06, 2009 10:26pm

I just use single-knee cap shin guards and don't have that problem*

*If I used anything other than the GD system, I would not be doing this.

IME, no.

Klokard Fri Mar 06, 2009 11:42pm

I use Fab laundry detergent and do not use any fabric softener on my undergarments. This seems to be as relevant.

tiger49 Sat Mar 07, 2009 10:18am

I don't drive to games. I either take public transit, walk or get someone else to drive. Mainly cause I don't have a car, but have often been known that if I have a bad game I will tend to walk home.

johnnyg08 Sat Mar 07, 2009 10:32am

After washing my clothing, I air dry everything except my socks. Things seem to last longer. I do dryclean my wool blend pants.

That's crazy quirky!

Kevin Finnerty Sat Mar 07, 2009 10:34am

I always bring two indicators, two pencils and two pens to the field; and I always bring two masks, two cups, two pairs of plate shoes; two pairs of base shoes and two pairs of plate pants to every game. I once had both laces on my plate shoes break (one after another) in one sitting. I carried my backup pair with me ever since, rather than leaving them on a shelf in the closet. Also, if you don't have time between games, a second pair is always clean and shiny.

I think loaner is the guy who takes the bus dressed for the plate.

I carry two of everything I have broken, lost, misplaced, torn or forgotten at least once. And I always have plenty of stuff to lend to a partner---except cups and caps, baby. Cups and caps, you're on your own. (And hopefully my extra shoes are too big.)

So you would make your partner work w/o a cap?

No, I'd sell him one. :D

It has been my experience that a back-up pair of shoe laces is lighter and takes up less space in my bag, than a spare pair of shoes....

Welpe Sun Mar 08, 2009 01:30am

Quirky things I do? I work both baseball AND softball. ;)

They're in a storage bin in the car and they stay there. Also, It takes 15 minutes to change shoelaces on two shoes. When it happened to me, it was a problem. Secondly, if you have the extra shoes, it'll never happen.

All good points, although I wasn't hammering you for carrying extra shoes; I was just making a point.

tballump Sun Mar 08, 2009 09:45am

Kevin
You take the cake as equipment junkie. I think Tim_C can retire his-once a year-equipment post and just let you take over. However, just for posterity and history's sake, I still want to see Tim_C's list once a year. Come on Kev, get movin. Before you retire, maybe you can drive around in an 18 wheeler full of gear. Maybe they'll think you are with NASCAR--uden,uden.

Kevin Finnerty Sun Mar 08, 2009 09:48am

Thank you!

But Tim C. is still the king in these parts. I'm sucking the wind of his gear hauler. I've just always been a rotate-the-shoes guy.

jicecone Sun Mar 08, 2009 12:41pm

Actually I used to take the bus to the games also but, now I just carry my lunch. And yes it is lonely wearing your plate gear on the bus, except for Fall ball. I usually ran into a lot of Football officials all decked out for their games.

Sometimes the kids get really scared and sometimes they think it's really neat trying to figure who I am with my mask on. Probably the best time was when the little old leady beat the hell out of me for not letting her have my seat. Boy was I glad I was weaing my mask and cup. Had to remove the cup though because when I got to the game I found out I was working the plate and not the bases.

Oh, and as stated previously, whenever I get the chance to wear those pink tights , TOOO cool man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In all honesty though I have found that the best set of shin guards one can use is a good pair of ice hockey shin guards. More comfortable and more protection. Just my quirk though.

That may be part of the problem.

I am not hammering you for all the stuff you carry around, but you need to reevaluate the time it takes to replace a broken shoelace.

Over-the calf (knee length) dress stockings go under the shinguards to keep the D-rings off of the sides of my knees.

Damn things are expen$ive too: $18 for three sets.

After the fact, would you pat $6 to make the chaffe go away? Think of it that way and they're cheap.

You could try full length compression tights.

If everything is two by two, might it then be inferred that everything is unclean? I guess carrying seven and seven indicators would be a bit bulky in the ol' ball bag though. :D

Agreed. I started out umpiring wearing Sears Long Johns underwear for the leg guards, because I couldn't stand the feeling of the straps against my bare skin. When Strongen invented the tights/cup combo, I switched over. The latest ones I wore were the McDavid Hex Pad ones. If you buy those, buy a size down, as they are a bit larger than advertised.

Nylons huh. Don't let Mark Padgett on the Basketball Forum hear that. He likes to wear fishnet hose while officiating basketball. :D
