Reebok Plate Shoe?
I thought I read something here a while back that Reebok was going to make the plate shoe available to the public. Is this true? If so, who is going to carry it? And, what is the price range?

I learned the plastic toe SpotBilt lesson myself a few weeks back. I was thinking NB's, but may have to give the Reeboks a try!

I have heard/read that the Reeboks are garbage (I have not personally tried them)...I have the New Balance and love them. In fact, on the Rob Drake board (now closed) the overwhelming consensus was that that model was not very popular. Spend your money on the New Balance, they're proven to be a quality shoe. Why take a chance on something like that?

NB!!
They are so comfortable .... |

I'm sorry if I offended you by dispelling the rumor that Reebok plate shows do not have steel toes. I assumed some would like the correct information. I happened to see Reilly's earlier this year. Feel free to report on any plate shows with which you are familiar. I will not insult you. |

No Brainer |
The samples the MLB guys received are steel toe. Mine are steel toe as well. The new ones will have a plastic toe. Reebok owns CCM and they have been using plastic in their hockey skates for years. I dont forsee a problem. As far as comfort.... equal to NB...but I like the low-top feel of the Reebok.

The last time I wrote about "an MLB umpire" doing such and such I was challenged for not being specific. This time I was specific and I am challenged for not being generic. I'm sorry professor. I'll try to find a third method to communicate next time, one that might suit you better. |
Ump153,
The only thing wrong with naming a major league umpire in a post is that it makes people that don't know any major league umpires jealous of your association with said umpire. What we think is just being factual about having a certain conversation, or working with a certain big league umpire, etc., other people perceive as "name dropping," which is not necessarily the case. Every time I've ever mentioned a situation involving a MLB player or umpire I've officiated/worked with, I get a bunch of static from the peanut gallery, as if it's a sin to mention knowing these people personally. Some people don't know the difference between having acquantances and jock sniffing. |

I don't know; I would think most serious umpires would want the steel toe. But let's see what the feedback is after they've been on the market. |

If you're making a claim about shoes, then the identity of the shoes' owner isn't really relevant. |
I'd rather see a carbon fiber or ceramic toe and instep, but I'm sure it's a trickle down from the industrial shoe folks.

If someone came up with composite toe plate shoes that met those standards, I would not hesitate to wear them. Until then, no way. That said, I'm willing to bet there are a few cheap steel toe plate shoes that don't meet those standards. |

I don't mind the looks of them, but finding one for my own wearing is a pain--they just don't feel like they fit right. |

And on the topic of shoes: I need some new plate shoes so I'll be trying the New Balances next season. |

I wouldn't be opposed to trying it out. The only thing I think is the the white is a little bit excessive but if its comfortable and cleans up easy that's all I that I personally look for. I also must add that a low top sneaker like plate shoe is more attractive to me than the high top NB's. |
This is the first good look I've had at them. But I agree the white is too much. I only recently got over having white on the plate shoes at all, with the +POS and NB shoes, but this may send my progress into regression. That would probably keep me from getting them. But if they had a more subtle markings I'd at least give them a try. But for now I'll stick with the NB 450's.

Isn't everyone aware that all you have to do is black out the white if you don't care for it? Some black leather dye and you're in business.

This is the early styling. They've been changed. The metatarsal plate is very different. |

Kevin,
Before switching over to the NB's, I wore the Asics base show. I blacked out all the white and you could not tell it was not an all black shoe. I doubt I'll ever buy the Reebok plate shoe, not because of the excessive white, but because I have always felt Reebok products just don't last. That being said I have had 50 shares of Reebok stock since 1981 when they only made fitness shoes. Paid $12.50 a share. |
Just out of curiosity. Did Vann's use to make a plate shoe? Base shoe? How did they wear and feel? How did they hold up? How protective were they (could they take shot)? What happened to them? Does anyone still have a pair that has held up?

My Vans were part of a gear bag which was stolen from my storage unit by some jack-booted thug(s). Included in the bag was a Reach RMCP protector and matching leg guards, a Wilson mask and various umpire accessories. |

Thanks for the update on the shoes. Oh yeah, thanks for sticking up for TH in one of your posts after reading all about that miserable situation for years, until it was all finally settled. I always felt he and the others got a rotten deal. That was a nice article on him in the Louisville paper. |

Bluetick,
Do you have an accurate phone number for Kessler Sports? I have tried emailing them and both emails have come back to me undelivered. |
I had Vans plate shoes - got them and a pair of Puma Scramblers when I got out of umpire school in 1985. The Van's lasted 6 years. I wore the Pumas for nearly 20 years, all the while looking for suitable replacements. I finally found those replacements, New Balance low top 350's, and that is my shoe of choice on the bases.
Oh, I miss those Pumas. Now it looks as though those 350's will be in my shoe hall of fame as well... JJ |
looks like too much white to keep clean.
