Did anyone see all of this?
Mariners/Twins tonight. Adrian Beltre up to bat. He checks his swing, then asks the umpire to appeal to U1?
Huh? I had looked away for a moment so I don't know what the original call was. I'm assuming ball because the appeal was made and U1 ruled he made an attempt. Rita |

Wait!!!!
The batter appealed on his check swing? Had to be a strike and he thought the base ump would reverse the plate guys call...

Having not seen the play, I am going to guess that Beltre felt that he had checked his swing and asked the PU why he didn't ask for help before making the call. Probably pointed down to the BU when he pleaded with the PU.

Enuff
As a Mariner fan in the Northwest, and an umpire to boot... I had to join this wonderful forum after months of just being an observer... because this topic was killing me..
This is what Beltre does every time he checks his swing... |

Beat me to it, Nige...I heard Rizzs or Niehaus (M's announcers) explain it last year, and they also said they don't know why he does it since it doesn't do him any good.
Mystery solved. (I hope that wasn't too controversial for my first post!) |
