Baiting?

Do you feel the player was baited here?

Without knowing what was said, I have no answer for you.

Hey, I've been to that stadium - Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Single A ball.

Who knows what was said. The video doesn't look good, but it is a possibility that the batter said something back to PU that needed to be addressed.

Although, if that was the case, PU could have concealed it a bit better. Perhaps brushing off the plate while chewing him out.

Baiting? No. By the looks of the video (which of course has its limitations), not the best game management IMO.

I watched this clip, and I never saw any words exchanged in a 'heated' manner. Perhaps the batter 'erased' the back line of the batters box while entering the box, and the PU said, "knock it off" and the batter responded 'inappropriately'?? Other than that, I can't answer your question.

Who knows what happened. We may only see the culmination of events here that started earlier in the AB. The PU may have quietly said his piece and was ignored or received an inappropriate reply.

poor quality vid but

You can see the batter mouthing words so there probably was cause. Who knows what was said but it probably wasn't, "Nice call John".

Don't leave us in suspense any longer. What happened??

SanDiegoSteve Mon Aug 04, 2008 06:35am

Well, he certainly covered that part up by going ballistic. Doesn't "look" like he wanted dumped; although the ramifications of getting dumped may have suddenly occurred to him.

Myrtle Beach...aren't they managed by Rocket? Rocket and I (and my partner) did a 5 minute dance 10 years ago or so.

Glad to see he's still in "A" ball.

Why would the umpire tell the batter he needed to stay in the box immediately following a foul ball?

L.A. Umpire Guy Thu Aug 07, 2008 03:58pm

I have a thick skin, but you can't let your authority be completely undermined by a comment of that type. I don't dump often, but if he says that, I dump him.

Maybe the umpire told him (correctly) to stay in after the first pitch, which was a ball, and the batter made his smart@ss comment after the foul ball. Can't really tell without being on the field.

Once he got dumped he sure didn't act hung over!:D

Except that explanation doesn't seem consistent with what the home plate umpire reportedly told msavakinas.

Drew (umpire) told me he was shocked, and should've dumped right there, but instead pulled off mask and said "what was that?"

rogelstad then replied "get your @ss back there and worry about balls and strikes"

boom gone.

IMO, he shouldn't have told him to stay in the box after a foul ball. That's not good game management.
