Train Wreck @ the Plate
Men's league, R3 and R1 two outs. Batter hits a swinging bunt directly to F1. F1 flips the ball to F2, and a collision occurs between F2, R3 and PU. I have no idea why F1 flipped the ball to F2 or why PU is on the third baseline. PU ends up face down and is shaking. I call time as both teams are screaming (defense out, offense umpire interference ???) I check on my partner's condition and after he says he's ok, I ask what call he made. He said he didn't see the play and was knocked out for a second. I called R3 safe. Home team protests the game. Is this the correct procedure in such a case?
BTW: R3 did not maliciously run over the catcher. If anyone had a video camera at the game this will end up on YouTube! |
Protests on what basis exactly? What rule was supposedly misapplied?

Eff the rules, I'm checking my partner. We can sort out the baseball details later. |

The rest of it can wait until partner gets up and is ok. |

If F2 did not tag R3, where can you get an out? Score the run, 2 outs still, play on McDuff. There was no umpire interference, just a train wreck. How can you punish the offense because F1 was too stupid to throw to first to get the BR, but instead made a bonehead throw to F2 that nobody was expecting (especially the PU).
Now, this is twice now in recent days I've heard of a plate umpire standing in the baseline where he has no business standing. It's 3rd baseline extended, not in the baseline itself, people. Sheesh. |

They can protest, but I don't see what they are going to hang their hat on. This isn't UI. R3 safe, play on!
...or call time, BR on 1B, check on PU, as the case may be. BR was prob already standing on 1B when BU realized PU was hurt badly enough to warrant killing the play. |

Geez Louise!! We just had this thread started by me last week. This is NOT umpire interference and we can't use the "god" clause either. The runner is safe at home.
