Train Wreck @ the Plate

Men's league, R3 and R1 two outs. Batter hits a swinging bunt directly to F1. F1 flips the ball to F2, and a collision occurs between F2, R3 and PU. I have no idea why F1 flipped the ball to F2 or why PU is on the third baseline. PU ends up face down and is shaking. I call time as both teams are screaming (defense out, offense umpire interference ???) I check on my partner's condition and after he says he's ok, I ask what call he made. He said he didn't see the play and was knocked out for a second. I called R3 safe. Home team protests the game. Is this the correct procedure in such a case?

BTW: R3 did not maliciously run over the catcher.

If anyone had a video camera at the game this will end up on YouTube!

Protests on what basis exactly? What rule was supposedly misapplied?

Possibly misguidedly wanting an umpire INT call.....................

Calling time during live ball play with multiple runners for reasons other than those defined by rule..................

Eff the rules, I'm checking my partner. We can sort out the baseball details later.

BR out, 3rd out? Did I miss something?

The rest of it can wait until partner gets up and is ok.

I assume the "swinging bunt" was not caught in flight by F1

SanDiegoSteve Mon Jul 21, 2008 12:26pm

If F2 did not tag R3, where can you get an out? Score the run, 2 outs still, play on McDuff. There was no umpire interference, just a train wreck. How can you punish the offense because F1 was too stupid to throw to first to get the BR, but instead made a bonehead throw to F2 that nobody was expecting (especially the PU).

Now, this is twice now in recent days I've heard of a plate umpire standing in the baseline where he has no business standing. It's 3rd baseline extended, not in the baseline itself, people. Sheesh.

No, the ball was not caught. With two outs, the ball "should have" gone to first base. The batter was about 1/3 of the way down the baseline when F1 picked up the ball!

Tim, you got it! They were looking for umpire interference! No can do!

LMan Mon Jul 21, 2008 12:52pm

They can protest, but I don't see what they are going to hang their hat on. This isn't UI. R3 safe, play on!

...or call time, BR on 1B, check on PU, as the case may be. BR was prob already standing on 1B when BU realized PU was hurt badly enough to warrant killing the play.

SD Steve, I can see where the topic of doing games over your head or ability level comes into play! When I was doing the pre-game with PU (never worked w/ him before), I got the impression that he had done this some many times he didn't even bother w/ a pre-game or he had no clue! Unfortunately the latter was the case. He never moved from behind the plate (until he was run over), verbalized swinging strikes and yelled fair ball! I am thankful that the players were gentleman, as this could have been a very ugly situation!

Geez Louise!! We just had this thread started by me last week. This is NOT umpire interference and we can't use the "god" clause either. The runner is safe at home.

I tried to explain this to 30 and 40 somethings trying to recapture their glory years!

For some of them, this is their glory years.
