Ed Montague

Is there something wrong with Ed Montague's right arm?

He is working the plate and calls strikes by punching his left arm to the right.

Does anyone know what's up with this?

Hold the phone, he has just been replaced behind home plate. He was nailed on the right wrist by a foul ball earlier in the game. He was hangin' tough, but he has succumbed to the pain.

Never mind.

Now this is the official umpire injury thread

Last night during the Phillies/Padres game, there was a long fly ball to left, U3 went out on the ball. Chris Guccione, the 2nd base umpire rotated over to take R1 (Milton Bradley) to 3rd. He was watching for the throw. Nobody was covering 3rd, and Phillies pitcher Adam Eaton was hustling over to cover 3rd. He too was watching for the throw. . . .

TRAIN WRECK!

Down went Eaton and Guccione. Guccione hurt his leg a bit, and Eaton tweaked his shoulder. Both continued, but it looked gnarly. (yeah, I know, nobody says that anymore. I'm a dinosaur.)

Was there only an R1? If so, I think the proper rotation is for PU to take the play at third.

From espn.com's game recap....

Quote:
Home plate umpire Ed Montague left the game after the bottom of the fourth after he was hit on the right thumb by a foul ball. X-rays showed no broken bones. Second base ump Bill Miller moved behind the plate. Montague returned to the game at third base in the top of the seventh, and third base umpire Marvin Hudson moved to second.

Well, I am uncertain of the runner situation, as I had just tuned in to the game as the play was happening. I am also uncertain if it was a long fly ball to left of to center. I also have no idea why Eaton had to cover third. The only replay they showed was of the collision itself, and not the play that led up to it.

Could be that Young had burritos for lunch and had to go to the clubhouse.

We'll just chalk that up to the SanDiego part of your handle.
