"But I Teach That Move"

After calling a balk on a RHP last night I heard one of the all time classic lines from a coach.

RHP with R2 and R3. Pitcher from set position lifts his free foot and knee to balance and completely hangs them. He looked like a statue for a full second before he decided to deliver the ball to the plate. I call the balk and out comes the manager.

"Why'd you balk my pitcher?"

I explain that he's not allowed to completely pause like he did once he begins his motion. You know, without hesitation, alteration, or interuption.

"But I teach that move. No one else has ever called it."

I just told him I guess I'm not everybody else.

Have a safe holiday everyone!

I remember calling this same balk in two different games, weeks apart. I could hear someone in each of these games say " That pitcher, (name that I don't remember), who pitches for (MLB Team) hangs his leg like that all the time."

In both cases they were talking about the same pitcher, an oriental pitcher in MLB.

I seriously think more baseball myths begin from watching MLB than from smitty umpires making bad calls.

Is oriental on the PC list now? I didn't know that. I was describing someone from eastern asia.

I mention that the pitcher was oriental so that somebody may know who I am talking about. How many oriental pitchers are there in MLB that hang their leg when they pitch? Not many, I'm sure.

Didn't Hideo Nomo do it?

One of the guys in the association tells a similar story. Seems he called a balk and the manager comes out for an explanation and says the same thing this guy did, "I teach that move". My friend says "well coach, if you are going to teach him to cheat then don't get upset when I catch him."

That is not what it means. Oriental means "east of" and was introduced in language to refer to land areas east of Europe. It referred to Turkey, Persia and all points east. It lumped together people from numerous countries and unrelated ethnic backgrounds.

Since the 1970's most educated people have known how to refer to people of Asia or specific countries within Asia far more accurately and with sensitivity to their true ethnicity.

On Topic, Who cares how MLB does it? Breaking a rule is breaking a rule. And Nomo never completely paused for a lengthy amount of time, his motion just slowed considerably.

I think you are right about this Garth. I went down to the family room and flipped over the oriental rug. I was expecting to see "Made in China" on the tag. Guess what it said....."Made in Persia." How about that. ;)
