Appeal Question
Had a situation last night that I've never had before and not sure if I handled it correctly.
Batter hits a triple but misses first base. After the play is complete the offensive manager calls for time and walks out to me and asks me if the BR had missed first. At first I said nothing and finally after about 5 seconds I said, "Coach that's not the proper procedure to appeal a baserunning situation." turned around and assumed my place on the field. They never did appeal and after the inning I called him over and explained to him the proper procedure. Was I correct or should I have done something differently?? |
Wait until the end of the game to explain the proper procedure.

tibear,
Sounds OK to me. What age group was this? I might have left the "instructional" part to another time, depending; like sometime not during the game. JM |
Maybe he coached FED during the 'umpire calls missed bags' period.
I'm with the others, wait until after the game. There's enough to do b/w innings that's more important. Periodically you'll have coaches wanting to discuss umpire judgement, philosophy, positioning, who you like in American Idol this season, and so on, just say, "Coach, this isn't the time, I'd be happy to give my views when the game's done." |
If this was a Fed game... isn't that the proper way to ask for a dead ball appeal? Coach asks for time and is granted time, coach tells umpire he wants to appeal batter/runner missing base. Umpire either says yes he did, or no he didn't.

If this WAS a Fed game, the verbal appeal is enough. The out should be called. Otherwise, it's not your job to instruct a coach on the proper way to appeal. If he really doesn't know how, and he really wants to know, then he'll look it up. I personally would not "instruct" him after the game. That just opens a whole can of worms! |
This was a Bantam (14-15 year old) OBR game.

No, sounds like you did it right. As mentioned I probably wouldn't have told him during the game how to appeal a play. He can read the same book as we do and learn how to get it right. Than again, as I've heard time and time again...."I've played this game for 30 years, I know the rules". I love that one:D

tibear, I'm confused. You said the offensive manager asked if his runner missed 1st base, did you mean the defensive manager?
|
MANY managers are offensive
