High School Pay for Baseball

I have noticed that there are many different states represented in this forum. I am curious as to what the pay is like for Boys Varsity Baseball in your areas. In Illinois it ranges from $35-$50 per one 7 inning game. For DH'ers the schools will take away $5-$10 claiming that you are already there. Let me know what you umpires get if you would.

I have been paid $56 for all my HS games except for one and I live in Illinois. So you might need to update that range. ;)

in alabama we get the same if there is a dh or not

tribefan1952 Sun Apr 08, 2007 10:21pm

I don't know if all associations in Ohio pay the same (probably not), but in the Elyria Assn., we get $50 per game (regular season). The assigner gets $5 of that. (So we get $45.) It doesn't matter if its varsity, JV, Freshman or Jr Hi. It doesn't matter if it's a doubleheader. It doesn't matter if it's a 2-man crew or if you are working alone. Same deal for softball.

This is now the 4th time this question has been asked since January of this year. Maybe we try the "SEARCH" command and see if the question has been asked within say 6 months!

In addition to the "Search" feature it's also possible to select "Next Thread" and skip a post. Also, there is no obligation to reply to everything you read.

To each their own.

In what part of the state do you reside, heavyd ?

WhiteHat Ref Mon Apr 09, 2007 09:47am

In the northwest suburbs of Illinois we get $56 for a single 2 man varsity, $53 for a one man under level game. As for doubleheaders, varsity 2 man is $98, underlevel one man is $93. In the summer all doubleheader games are 2 times the single rate of $56 for high school summer leagues.

I don't work that much in the spring...our HS season is short. 1st part of April until Memorial Weekend...then playoffs...but unless you know somebody you're not getting playoff games no matter how good you are...state tournament is a little different though...do coaches rate you through the State during your HS season. We are rated here in MN

Tennessee HS Varsity rates are set by the state - $60 single game, $80 doubleheader

Everything under varsity is negotiated by the local association, so it varies from area to area.

In my association, JV is the same as varsity, so most schools only use one umpire for those games. If it is a Varsity JV doubleheader, one umpire will work the plate for the varsity game and go home. The other umpire works the bases for the varsity game and works alone for the JV game. He gets $100, which is $60 for the varsity game and both $20's for the double header.

Rich Tue Apr 10, 2007 08:22am

In WI we get $55-$60 depending on the conference. Some pay mileage on top of that, but I don't work that far away (I do for basketball and football).

If we work 2, we get paid 2 game fees, as we should.

DonInKansas Tue Apr 10, 2007 04:34pm

All DH in KSHSAA

90 dollar V doubleheader
60/70 lower levels

All add mileage for us out oftowner types.

Coachdg Sun Apr 15, 2007 05:24pm

This what we make in Southern NY

In the Westchester County area we make $93 for a varsity, 78 for J.V. and $70 for jr. High. No milage but we do get late fees $35 if a game strts more than a half hour after scheduled time

rei Sun Apr 15, 2007 08:39pm

Oregon:

6A/5A/4A Varsity - $48 ea Ump
3A/2A Varsity - 43.25 ea Ump
6/5/4 JV - 38.50 ea Ump (increase by 1/3 if you work it alone)
6/5/1 Freshman - 33.50 ea Ump (increase by 1/3 if you work it alone)

Playoffs, add $5 per ump (all 3 man)
State Championship game, add $10 per ump (all 3 man)

In my association, we have negotiated to get 1 round trip milage at $.44.5 per mile, calculated from downtown Portland to the school. This total is split by how many umpires work the game.

Are these fees typical for Orange and Rockland counties too? If so I may have to move north of the border. Fees in North Jersey range from about $67 to $72 for varsity games, $48 for sub-varsity.

Coachdg Mon Apr 16, 2007 10:36am

These fees are for Section One, which covers Westchester, Rockland, Putnam and Dutchess. As I understand it the Sections on Long Island are the highest paid in NY state, making at or just over $100 per game for the varsity level. NYC public schools is also slightly higher than us at almost $1oo per game. At the end of our current contract 2010 we will be making $101 per game froa varsity contest. That is for football, baseball, basketball, softball and Lacrosse.

edhern Mon Apr 16, 2007 10:22pm

Yes, Varsity on Long Island is over $100 per game for each umpire (there are 2) and $86 for Junior Varsity. You get about 16 games at the varsity level and between 20 and 30, depending on your availability at JV. You can do Junior High games for $67.50 when the seasons are done. There is a fee and half for a one man game at all levels. With all this, there are still not enough JV and JH umpires. Summer ball pays at least $50 to $60 depending on the age level and the Men's leagues $70 or more depending on the league.
