Scheduling lead time

How much advance notice do you guys get for your games? Do you ever get your week's games lined by the preceeding weekend, or are you getting called one or two nights prior to the game?

Both! During the HS season, games change constantly. In the summer, games get moved, weather, and a host of other problems cause rescheduling. In the fall, games are Saturdays and Sundays so not too much conflict there.

For HS season I get a schedule that includes 3 weeks of games, and I get this about a week before the first game.

But I also get calls to work games not on the schedule, usually in the morning of the game day but sometimes as late at 2:00 for a 4:00 game, but this is very unusual.

I got a call at 2:00 to work a game at 4:00 a couple years ago. I did not know who my partner would be. I arrived, and seeing no partner I dressed for the plate, went to the plate meeting and told the coaches I was a late minute sub and did not know who my partner was supposed to be. We could either start and maybe end the game with one umpire, wait until my unknown partner arrived, or call it off and play another day. They chose option 1, my partner never showed, it was 2-1 game in 1:20 with no complaints, and home team paid me $85 ($55 normal game fee).

Once scheduled, how do you deal with cancellations? Is it the umpire's responsibility to find a replacement? The assignors? Just curious.

For myself I schedule the summer games so I work when I want to or can't get anyone else. I usually allocate everyone else first and there's plenty of slots open for me afterwards. The majority of summer ball is weekend DH's, or tournaments. I'm attempting to schedule the entire season in one shot. Problem with that is a couple of guys' work schedules' change weekly.

College Season is scheduled all at once.

I have HS games scheduled for 2009.

My college schedule arrives sometime between November and January for the entire season.

Same here, we call the assignor in early Jan, pick what available games we want on the days we want, assignor gives us a HS spring season printout - saying nothing is in stone, so expect the normal changes....

I receive my HS games a week at a time (games are assigned on Sunday night before the week begins). For legion, we get a season's schedule at the pre-season meeting. However, there are many additions and changes that occur after the schedule is handed out.

I already have my 2007 HS game assignments. In December, we are asked to fill out our eligibility. Based upon that, we then receive our 2007 game assignments in January for the entire HS season.

In Summer, I receive a 2 week schedule in advance and also inform the summer assignor my availability for Tournaments "coming down the road"

We get our games on the Arbiter, and right now I have my games for the next 2 weeks. The assigner will schedule more games this week during his regular work hours.

I am the assigner (not assignor) for my area. I have 60 plus umpires to assign to 950 plus games for the season (60 plus games per week). I assign a week at a time on Sundays for the next week plus next weekends tournaments. Any changes during the week are handled as required which my be as short as 2 hours before game time.

Seeing as we're discussing spelling. It can be spelled assigner or assignor.

http://209.161.33.50/dictionary/assignor for clarification purposes.

Back to baseball.
