Longtime ESPN baseball analyst Harold Reynolds was fired by the all sports cable network after he was accused of sexual harassment, the New York Post reported Wednesday.
The former Gold Glove-winning second baseman, a member of the Baseball Tonight team for 11 years, said he didn't do anything to warrant his dismissal and wants his job back.
"It was a total misunderstanding," Reynolds told the Post. "My goal is to sit down and get back. To be honest with you, I gave a woman a hug and I felt like it was misinterpreted."
The newspaper, quoting sources, reported that the woman is an ESPN employee.
ESPN spokesman Mike Soltys said the Walt Disney-owned network would not comment further on the reasons behind Reynolds' sudden departure.
Besides teaming with analyst John Kruk and anchor Karl Ravech on Baseball Tonight, Reynolds also covered the College World Series, Little League World Series and Major League Baseball All-Star game for ESPN.
Reynolds made his last appearance on Baseball Tonight Sunday evening.
In an interview with USA TODAY, Reynolds said he was fired by ESPN at a meeting Monday afternoon while still in the first year of a six-year employment pact. Reynolds declined to discuss the reasons behind his termination. But he said he's already received several job offers and his attorneys will be working out the financial details of his contract over the next few weeks.
"They made a decision to have a change in direction. I respect their decision, but I don't necessarily agree with it," says Reynolds. "Six months ago, I was in a situation where my contract was up. I had opportunities to pursue. Now I'll pursue other avenues that are there. In a strange way, those avenues were created by ESPN."
ESPN anchor Mike Greenberg announced on-air that Reynolds had left the network during Tuesday's 6 p.m. SportsCenter program.
The two-time All-Star started his TV career with ESPN in 1996 after 12 seasons with Mariners, Baltimore Orioles and California Angels.

Before i read the above post, i heard rumors that it was because of multiple instances of sexual harassment- i guess it's confirmed if it's in the NY post.

I read on anither website that it wasn't sexual harassment, but rather a number of heated arguments with Baseball Tonight poroducers regarding coverage of A-Rod.

I don't remember where I saw it so you can take it for what its worth.

So A-Rod's slump not only is hurting the Yankees, but it got Harold
Reynolds fired also ???

I also read somewhere that the recent flare up in the Middle East was linked to arguements regarding whether or not A-Rod should be moved down in the lineup or not.

Anything else we can pin on him?

I heard it was because Harold Reynolds voted for more than one choice in the recent "whats your strike three mechanic" on this board. I heard he chose both the chainsaw and ripping the phone book.

I thought he picked bow & arrow, starting the lawn mower, and punch out...

Well, in any case...

I think he was one of the best Commentators on Sports TV.

We can not judge, nor will we ever really know what happened.

It's just too bad.

My money is on FOX Network picking him up. If they do, I'll spend a little more time on channel 37 (in my area).

OK, let's start a pool as to just when the unRev. Jesse Jackson will get involved in this firing.

I'm surprised he hasn't called a press conference already. Must be because he found out Reynolds voted for Bush or something.
