Understood, based on all the responses. Thanks all for the clarifications.
Now, as someone in our association asked regarding this topic, what would you do if BR was outside the box when he inadvertantly stepped on the ball? Easier to IF him?

In or out of the box the batter must vacate the area where the fielder is trying to make a play. And it better be obvious that the batter is trying to disrupt the catcher, for interference to be called.
