I was working a semi-pro league game tonight (mostly college players home for the summer)in the seveth inning I called a balk on the pitcher and he was not very happy. After a couple of words by him, I told him to "take it easy" and that "that is enough." He then said that he is not going to take it easy and that I needed to "pay attention to the game" I then ejected the player

Now here comes the exciting part....

The coach of that team comes out and is yelling and started teling me how I missed a call from the inning before. He then said "F#$* you" I then ejected him. As I turn back toward him he says "F#$* you" again and shoves me with both hands in the chest and knocked me back a few feet.

My partner then got the coach away from me and the situation cooled down and we finished the game out.

While my partner and I were having our post game and changing the same coach comes to us and tries to apologize, but instead tells me I need thicker skin!

Sorry this was not really a question. This is just the strangest situation that has ever happened to me in a game.

Maybe a bigger body guard. How in the world did he get into your changing room - or were you out in the open?

Coaches, the more I learn, the more I hate rats.

Why can't they reinforce what the umpire says. Look pitch, you want to argue with the umpire? Then you will be ejected. You loose. Don't be a dummy. Shut your mouth and throw the ball. I don't have you out here to argue with the umpire. I have you out here to throw strikes. Do it or go set on the bench and somebody else with throw strikes.

I can only presume that there is more to the story that you didn't tell us like what the police officer said and how long the league commish is suspending both of them. Let us know the details.

You should have stopped the game at that point, found a cell phone, and called the police immediately.

Last year a coach at a Select Travel Team Tournament spit in my son's face. He called time, asked the TD to call the police.

The coach got in his truck and took off when he heard that. The police chased him down and brought him back to the field. After questioning witnesses, the police cited the coach for 4th degree assault.

The coach was already on probation for violating court ordered anger management classes.

He lost his job and moved out of state.

And they wonder why they're called Rats.

Two weeks ago, my partner got chest-bumped in a game by a coach. That coach is banned for life from the league.


Don't let the apology afterwards deter you from getting him suspended/arrested. That's like someone going out and committing a murder, then turning himself in and saying i'm sorry. The punishment isn't going to be lessened since he said i'm sorry and turned himself in.

My assignor is putting pressure on the league commisioner to suspend the the coach for a year and have him pay a fine (I am not sure how much)

Push for a lifetime ban. If not, then press charges. That is inexcuseable behavior by a coach.

Didn't Roberto Alomar spit on an umpire about 10 years ago? Wasn't Alomar's punishment rather light?

Didn't Billy Martin kick dirt all over several umpires? What was Martin's punishment?

Alomar spit on John Hirschebck in 1996 and got 5 games, which he didnt have to serve in the playoffs. I'm too young for Billy Martin but I would think that punishment would have been useless on him so they didn't clamp down unless he got flagrantly abusive. Maybe someone can help me out?

I have never been pushed by a coach, ejected or otherwise, so it took some time to think on this. I can't say that pushing an umpire after an ejection would be in the same class of offense as instructing a pitcher to hit the umpire in the head with a warmup toss (see another post on this). For the former I would not press charges, for the latter I would.

I would, after the game, go directly to my car, get in it, and leave. On the way I would arrange with my partner a nearby off-site meeting place to meet. If I am in unfamiliar area I would ask him to follow me to the first convenience store we come upon.

I would send an email to my assignor and ask my partner to do the same. I would then leave it up to him, and whatever adminstrative body exists for this league, to decide what the penalty will be. For a push I would not expect a lifetime ban, but I would expect some penalty. The after game offense would not occur, because I would be at the nearest convenience store.

If you are pushed by a coach who has been ejected, it might be time to go home, unless you are sure you are working a league that will deal with this appropriately.
