NFHS rules.....runner on second....coach sends in a pinch-runner for him late in game.....the player the coach picks to pinch run is a starter who has been in the game all along.......this is an illegal substitute but....(and I am not sure why they did this) but it was not caught by us and the opposing coach questioned it after his pitcher threw 2 pitches....here lies my question.....is an illegal substitute an illegal substitute at any time he is discovered? Is there anything to the "must be discovered and questioned before the next thrown pitch?" I know this is probably pretty basic stuff but it is giving me a headache. We called the substitute out and that ended the inning. I hesitated at first because of the timing of the discovery. Thanks for your input!

"For discovery of an illegal player on offense or defense by an umpire or either team, that player shall be restricted to the bench/dugout for the duration of the game. If a restricted player re-enters the game on offense, he shall be called out immediately and ejected upon discovery by an umpire or either team." Sounds to me like we restrict the illegal sub to the dugout, but no out, unless he was restricted already. And it can be found anytime. Somewhere I am sure there is a ruling that once he has completed base running and is in the dugout it is too late to discover.

Chief,

Check out rule 3-1 in your Federation book. It should answer all your questions.
