How is an attack on a coach (or umpire for that matter) different from one on a teacher, a Scout leader, a grocery clerk, or an insurance salesman?

I agree fully. Our nation erred when it began creating categories of victims. "Sure I hit him with a baseball bat, but it had nothing to do with [race/color/creed/gender/sexual orientation or officiating/coaching status]. I simply didn't like his face."

"Oh. Then you get a discount on your sentence."

But of course I'm politically incorrect on many other matters, too.

Keep in mind, however, that sports-related assaults have for many years been treated less seriously than other assaults. The law even acknowledges that spontaneous fights—usually brief scuffles in which no one is seriously hurt—during sporting contests should be looked on as the inevitable result of heated competition. When Juan Marichal hit Johnny Roseboro with a bat back in 1965, the league, not the courts, handled the situation.

Of course, things are different now.
