Actually if you diagram plays 2SF is really about 90* to every call EXCEPT dribblers to F5 and plays originating at or near the plate.
I would call saying "2SF" is trendy. It is not taught at professional clinics that I know of. |

PLus, 90* on ANY ball beyond (roughly) the mound and to the right of 2b will put you in foul territory. I doubt if that's really where you go on plays where you're not forced.
One of the reasons I teach 2SF is that individuals constantly / consistently went much farther than 90*, even on throws from a charging F5. Some went so far that they were still moving. Almost all went so far that they couldn't get a good look at a pulled foot / swipe tag. Teaching "2SF, then adjust" solved most of those problems. |

I didn't even know it was a trend, but now that I think about it, those are my usual steps when the ball is hit in the infield. Left foot, right foot, set!
Of course it may vary, but in two man, very rarely.
