In FED--
I know that a fake tag is defined as obstruction. How about this situation:

no runners, BR hits a solid drive just inches fair into RF. As BR accelerates between 1B and 2B F6 sets-up at 2B and acts as if he is about to receive the throw. No fake tag, just acting as if the ball is already in the air. BR sees this and stops at 2B when he could have easily tried for a triple.

Does a fielder actually have to go through an entire fake tag motion? Is what I have described legal or illegal?

A fake tag (FED) is the act of the fielder simulating a tag without posession of the ball. In your situation, the play is legal. Too bad for the runner.
