Never had this one before, today, R1 and R2 0 out, BR hit to 5 who is moving to 2B to make the catch, R2 takes 3 steps, stops and backs up 3-5 steps toward 2B. 5 throws to 4 on 2B for the force on R1 and R2 makes 3rd because no one covered. A fan freaked out,

"Come on Blue, He can run backwards on a force play, He's out, You can't run backwards, Blue, Read the rule book you Idiot!"

It was absolutely hilarious, I had never heard that one before.

Had a similar play last year in a softball tournament semi-final game. F4 dropped the ball trying to tag R1 who was retreating towards first base. F4 (after retrieving the ball), F3 and F9 all converge on the BU trying to insist that R1 is out for retreating towards 1st base. BU was trying hard to extricate himself from the mob. R1, R2 and the BR all scored while they argued at the BU. Both teams and the stands all figured the out should have been called.

Who was playing in that game?

I know King City game out of York, but I am not sure if they were at Whipper, or FG with you.

My game ?? Just a small weekend tourney here in Gatineau. I can't remember if the Aces were one of the teams but if so they would have been on offense. They get down to southern Ontario now and then.

Oddly, many people have the same misconception about running backward on a force play. Perhaps it arises from softball, in which the BR cannot step backward on his way to 1B to avoid or delay a tag. (It's treated as interference.)

Yesterday, called a youth softball game. Pitch comes in, and I call it a strike. Some fan of the offensive team yells "come on, that was at her knees." I swear people just keep getting stupider every year.
