Went to a small town LL game last night to watch some kids from my Sunday School play a game. I was called on to umpire. I referee football, but I've never umpired. They didn't ask me to just ump the bases mind you. They pulled out a mask, a beaten up balloon protector and asked me to call balls and strikes!!!!!
Well, I survived--no hits to the unprotected shins, and, um other areas thankfully!!!! I had to call pitches from my knee (short kids), the protector didn't fit very well, but I DID remember to take my mask off and tuck it under my left arm as a moved up the third base line, between innings etc. The kids really thanked me for the job I did, said I was the "best ump we've had this year" and really appreciated me for filling in. I know if I keep at it, I'll have to run to my car at some point after a game, but I think I've found another sport to officiate! Now if I can just get my OWN uniform! :-) |
