Used to get questioned on this when the head coach was the 3rd base coach and had to walk back to the 1st base dugout when the inning ended - and he paused to pick up the ball on the ground to give to his pitcher who was coming out of the dugout and then gave him a word of encouragement. Oddly, there never was an NCAA rule situation that specifically addressed this.
