Question

Today's Twins-Yankees game. Twins lead after 4 innings,
1-0. Santana comes out with an injury, not able to go the 5 standard innings for the win. The first pitcher out of the pen is Rick Reed, who becomes the pitcher of record and pitches 2/3 inning, followed by J.C. Romero pitching 1 1/3, LaTroy Hawkins pitching 2, and Eddie Guardado pitching 1. The game was never tied, yet Hawkins got the win. Huh?

Is this one of those "scorer's discretion" rules, where the official scorer can give the win to whomever he feels deserves it most? Can anybody supply a rule for this?

Also, if this is indeed the case, can the scorer still give the win to the starting pitcher if he feels that the starting pitcher deserves it by being the best pitcher, or is the 5 innings a steadfast rule?

10.19 (c) When the starting pitcher cannot be credited with the victory because of the provisions of 10.19 (a) or (b) and more than one relief pitcher is used, the victory shall be awarded on the following basis: (1) When, during the tenure of the starting pitcher, the winning team assumes the lead and maintains it to the finish of the game, credit the victory to the relief pitcher judged by the scorer to have been the most effective;

later in that same rule

(4) The winning relief pitcher shall be the one who is the pitcher of record when his team assumes the lead and maintains it to the finish of the game. EXCEPTION: Do not credit a victory to a relief pitcher who is ineffective in a brief appearance, when a succeeding relief pitcher pitches effectively in helping his team maintain the lead. In such cases, credit the succeeding relief pitcher with the victory.

Yup..in that situation, it is left up to official scorer to decide who the winning pitcher is and it isn't necessarily the first guy out of the pen. In the scorere's opinion, Hawkin's was the most effective guy out of the pen and I tend to agree with that.

Me too.

Reed: too brief, plus gave up a double.
Romero: shaky control (pitches in the dirt), survived 1 1/3
Hawkins: brilliant 2 innings, shut the Yanks down, 4K
Guardado: survived due to brilliant defense (Stewart especially)
