Everything felt so weird.

Last night. Bona fide boys high school varsity game at a new magnet/charter high school, in an old middle school gymnasium. Last season the team benches were on the same side of the court as the scorers table, like every single high school game that I've officiated over the past thirty-four years. Athletic director got sick of the parents second guessing the coaches so he moved the team benches, not the scorers table (wiring issue), over to the opposite table side of the gymnasium, because there were no bleachers on that side of the court. So now we've got the table, and parents, on one side of the court, and the team benches on the other side of the court.

You think that this sounds easy? Give it a try. It isn't easy. I often felt like a ballerina pirouetting in the center circle, especially reporting timeouts.

And it gets weirder.

The boys head varsity coach was female. Only the second female head coach of a high school boys varsity team that I know of here in Connecticut, and the first that I've ever officiated a game for.

It was so surreal.
