If At First You Don't Succeed ...

We've had several new magnet, and charter, high schools pop up in our local area over the past several years. They usually start with only a junior varsity program before transitioning to a full fledged varsity program. With low enrollment numbers, most (but not all, wink, wink, cough, recruiting) of these schools have trouble competing with established programs.

I've worked at one of these schools, in a nearby city, a few times each of the past three, or four, years. I'm not the kind of official who pays much attention to teams won, and lost, records, I just show up and work the games. Last week I had this team and they won a game by a comfortable margin, yet there was a lot of extra celebrating in the gymnasium. As the athletic director unlocked the dressing room he told us that it was their first victory, I said, "First victory the season?", and he replied, "First varsity victory ever". It took them four years.
