Batter swings and misses at 3rd strike. Catcher misses the ball and retrieves it at the backstop. First base is unoccupied. Here is the weird part: the batter runs towards first base; as he gets near first and senses that the ball is being thrown by the catcher, he veers to his right (two or three feet) to obviously try to get hit by the ball. The ball does not touch the batter-runner and is caught by the 1B and the batter-runner is retired.

What if the ball had struck the batter-runner? Obviously the rules cover running inside the baseline and interfering with a throw. Is there anything in the rules about running outside the baseline and interfering with a throw?
