Sometimes it takes a while...
for a coach's light to come on.
Varsity girls tournament last weekend. Early in the 2nd period A1 looks to be spotting up for a 3 pt attempt so B1 and B2 (who are in the lane) turn to face the basket for any possible rebound. Shot hits the back of the rim and is obviously going long so they do not move. However, A2 runs forward and jumps in an attempt at the rebound...misses it completely and knocks B1 down and B2 stumbles from the contact but does not do down.
I call a foul on A2. Coach has a minor hissy fit. Less than a minute later (game time) there is a TO and as the teams are coming out I have the following brief conversation:
Coach: How was that a push?
Me: Your player displaced two defenders who were stationary.
Coach: They have to give her the opportunity to land.
Me: Coach, do you teach your players to move out of the way of anyone coming at them after they have gotten to a spot on the floor?
Coach: Of course not.
I tilt my head a little and look at him without saying anything.
Coach (smiling): Well, if your going to be that way about it.
