Sounds like the live ball that passed through the basket was not the result of a try for goal. So if a foul occurs while a try is not in flight, the ball becomes dead immediately.

I'd like to see it, but from your description it sounds like the officials ruled correctly.

And now...a question for an NCAA rules master: Try or not a try is a judgment call, so probably not reviewable. However, assuming you ruled "not a try," could you then go to the monitor to determine whether the ball passed through the basket before or after the foul? And if before, assuming the contact was neither flagrant nor technical, could you then erase the foul?
