I was thinking the same thing and have noticed that in my area, which is urban. We're probably about a 60/40 mix favoring 94', and every time a new HS gym goes in, it seems to be 94' in part to allow more room with cross courts. I also think part of it is to appease athletes who might want to get ready for the next level. Football fields are the same size; baseball diamonds are, too. Why shouldn't basketball courts be?

Also it seems to be cheaper to build one big gym than it is to build a small gym and a separate aux gym.
