Yeah that is typical. What we do is called bracket racing. You pick your time you think you can run and are giving a head start accordingly. Example if I pick 7 sec and you pick 8 sec I would give you a 1 sec head start. However to keep people from getting an unfair head start if you go quicker than your predicted time then you automatically lose. Therefore you will not only look at your opponent but lift off the gas in order to slowdown but still beat them by a small margin in order to reduce your chances of "breaking out" or going to quick and losing.
As far as shifting my cars have electric shifters that shift at pre set rpms
