Without seeing the actual data, I'll go ahead and presume (for now) that the statistical analysis is sound. My reaction is that I'm sure there's something to it, but that it's subconscious at most. I also can't give it too much credence as there's no assessment of variance or range for different officials. And even if it is true, the far worse crime would be trying to somehow do something different to "prevent" the tendency.
So basically, nice article. Some academics will get some kind of publishing credit. And we'll go back to calling games as fairly as we can.
