The tipped throw-in LANDED out of bounds. That's pretty clear even from across the court.
It's true, the trail didn't do himself any favors. He was surprised by the tip and forgot to chop. Then when the ball (clearly) landed out of bounds, he didn't blow his whistle.
I timed the touch to the ball hitting out of bounds. Twice. 1.3 seconds each time. Zapruder agrees with me.
That would've left 0.9 seconds for a final inbounds pass. Watching the last shot, it would've been good with 1.2 seconds or 0.9 seconds. As awkward as everything ended up being with the clock, the outcome would've been the same. I watched the frame-by-frame video. I'm not convinced -- clocks do NOT start instantaneously on the touch and I think that with 0.8 or 0.9 seconds, he would've gotten it off before the horn.
(One final comment, though. It's easy to be an Internet official.)
