Penalties & clock malfunctions
During a game last night, at the 10:42 mark of the 3rd period, home team gets a penalty or head contact. Player went to the box & after arriving in the box, the clock malfunctioned & counted down to 10:30 (12 seconds off) right as play resumed. Scorer & Penalty Box Attendant got the attention of the timer to mention the discrepancy.
At the 8:39 mark, a coincidental penalty got called (next stoppage), before play could resume, the penalty box attendant got the attention of the referee by not closing the penalty box door & raising his hand. The referee came over to the penalty box after seeing the penalty box not being closed. The penalty box attendant with confirmation of the scorer explained that the penalty at 10:42 had expired but the player was not released due to the clock malfunction. The referee using the knowledge of the penalty box attendant & scorer, released the player & play continued.
Should there have also been a clock reset?
Neither coach complained about the situation (either not aware or just wanted to get the game over with).
The score at the time of the incident was 5-5. Did this change the outcome of the game due to the malfunction & having 12 less seconds on the clock?
The final outcome of the game was the home team 7- visiting team 6 via Shootout.
