Look at the Definition of a "Foul," in 2-16-1.

It is not a foul ball unless the ball "settles on foul territory between first base or between home and third base."

So basically if the ball is in fair terrtory (use the foul line as a guide) then the ball is fair or foul based on the location of the ball. The batter's box has nothing to do with fair/foul, in itself.
