If your partners don't see the difference between these two, I am not sure you can convince them. Although I'd rephrase a bit... if he's running forward and gets forced out of bounds, what really matters is whether he's still going forward or going backward at the time he goes out of bounds. Just the fact that he's forced out of bounds doesn't really give you the answer one way or the other.
