Luciano was right - it is amazing, and says something about the guys in the old days, that Baseball never had a scandal with the umpires, when you consider how crazy low their pay and per diems were in the old days, Jocko, in his book, says it was something like $6-7 a day! How did they survive? Back then, since there only were 7 cities in the NL, and 8 in the AL, it was very easy to get to know people like hotel and restaurant owners who would give then really good deals. All they ever wanted were some 'game used' balls - Luciano points out how some of those 'game used balls', had actually been bounced off a wall in a ballpark couple of dozen times

Jocko's book, by the way, is a really good read. Not only do we get a glimpse of umpiring in the 'good old days', but of baseball in general. Having been an umpire, he can look at things with a more realistic eye.
