He asked me before the game (the visitors were late so we had dead time), how old I was. When I told him he said he had been umpiring 20 years longer than I've been alive. I'm in my mid-30's, which puts him at least into his 60's or 70's. I think he has forgotten more than I've known about the game, which might be part of the problem.

There are 30-year veterans ... and then there are rookies who have repeated their 1 year of experience 30 times. Sounds like you had the latter.
I've been doing this 21 years. I study for the tests, and constantly read and post on boards like this one. I go to clinics and listen. I seek out my betters and try to learn from them. Sadly, some of the guys who came up the same time as I did have not cracked open a rulebook since those first years, and like to sit in the back at the clinics and talk about fishing.
