I was working 6th grade tonight. As I was administering free throws I noticed one of the players not in the lane (he was outside the 3 point line) standing near the sideline opposite the scorers table. Standing with him (outside the court) was a spectator who was giving him advice. What do the books say about players interacting with spectators?
I initially whistled and pointed at them to separate. The man thought I was whistling for him being on the court, yelled "I am off the court" and resumed talking to the player. I did not know what the rule was, so I resumed the free throws. They had maybe a 30 second conversation, and the players coach seemed fine with it.

At the sixth grade level it was probably a parent who thinks he knows more than his child's coach.
