Not legal in HS using NFHS rules. Only the
non-pivot foot may take the backwards step. From what I am reading in this original post, the pivot foot took a backward step. As a matter of fact, the way that I read this, it is illegal in associations that I call for.
The part about the non-pivot foot being behind the pitching plate at the start of the pitch is legal, though, in NFHS and USSSA. However, once the pivot foot moves backwards, it is an illegal pitch.
