In my opinion, the bats are the single greatest factor in the deterioration of SP. It's not just the home runs; it's all those balls that would have been outs 25 years ago but now shoot through or over the fielders.

The main field at our county park has 300-foot fences, 10 feet high, and the wind usually drifts in. In the old days, maybe 20 balls a season would have been hit over that fence by the entire league (150 total games), virtually always by genuine sluggers. I did a game last year in which each team hit its 6 homers by the third inning. One team inadventently hit 5 more (for outs) and lost 44-38.

There are no more open tournaments around here. How would the games ever end?
