In my experience, timers on the fence, "in plain sight" of coaches is the preferred way to administer timed games.
This goes for many of the organizations I have worked.

This is actually a long time running joke on the board.
The problem with a visible clock is the coach who wants to play games with the time and coach the game to the clock instead of the opponent on the field. The delay tactics have become absurd at times and it just isn't the umpire's job to be a time keeper.
