APG, if the "player gathered the ball/ended his dribble with his left foot on the floor," wouldn't that left foot be the pivot foot (until the jump stop, of course)?
Whether or not he has a pivot foot depends on his subsequent actions...he won't establish a pivot foot until his/her second foot touches the floor

Rule 4 Section 44 Traveling

ART. 2 . . . A player, who catches the ball while moving or dribbling, may stop, and establish a pivot foot as follows:

b. If one foot is on the floor:
1. It is the pivot when the other foot touches in a step.
I'm sure you have no issues with determining the pivot foot, so this is just a small thing about semantics.
